The short answer

What is Kunzea oil?

Kunzea oil is an essential oil steam distilled from the leaves of Kunzea ambigua, an aromatic shrub native to Tasmania and south-eastern Australia. It has a clean, fresh, lightly medicinal aroma with a hint of spice, and is traditionally valued in aromatherapy for its grounding, decongesting and soothing character.

Kunzea belongs to the Myrtaceae family - the same botanical family as eucalyptus, tea tree and lemon myrtle. What sets it apart is its unusually high content of alpha-pinene alongside 1,8-cineole, globulol and viridiflorol: a natural constituent profile that has been studied for anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activity.

Zea was the world's first company to build a natural wellness range around Kunzea. Our oil is single origin from North-East Tasmania, wild-harvested, and GC/MS tested so you know exactly what is in every bottle.

Wild-harvested in Tasmania

A natural treasure, found nowhere else on Earth

Kunzea ambigua flourishes in the pristine wilderness of North-East Tasmania, on Pyemmairrener land. It grows wild - untouched by cultivation - and is steam distilled from the freshly harvested leaves to capture its pure, unadulterated aroma.

For generations the plant was known locally as "tick bush". Today it is recognised as one of Australia's most remarkable native oils, and it remains the signature ingredient at the heart of everything we make.

Why Kunzea is different

Inside the oil: a rare natural profile

Kunzea oil's character comes from its naturally occurring constituents. These compounds have been studied for their anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties - and they are why Kunzea behaves so differently to more familiar oils.

39.9%

Alpha-pinene

The fresh, foresty top note. Studied for anti-inflammatory activity.

15.8%

1,8-cineole

The clearing, decongesting note also found in eucalyptus.

11.9%

Globulol

A soft, woody sesquiterpenol studied for soothing properties.

9.4%

Viridiflorol

Contributes to Kunzea's grounding, balsamic depth.

From wild bush to bottle

Sustainably wild-harvested in Tasmania

Our Kunzea isn't farmed in neat rows. It grows wild along Tasmania's rugged north-east coast and the Bass Strait islands, where the harsh, windy climate is exactly what the plant loves. We wild-harvest and steam distil on site - taking only the foliage the bush can spare, so it keeps thriving season after season.

How people use it

Ways to enjoy Kunzea oil

Diffuse and inhale

Add a few drops to a diffuser, oil burner or vaporiser to fill a room with its clean, grounding aroma - a favourite for focus and calm.

Add to the sauna

A long-loved sauna oil. A few drops on the heat create an uplifting, refreshing steam that many find deeply restorative.

Blend it yourself

Kunzea blends beautifully with other Australian natives - Eucalyptus, Lemon Myrtle, Fragonia, Sandalwood and Rosalina.

Dilute for the skin

Traditionally used, well diluted in a carrier oil, on small skin concerns. Always patch test and dilute before applying.

Freshen the air naturally

A natural alternative to synthetic air fresheners - a few drops in water make a simple room or linen mist.

Set the mood to wind down

Its grounding aroma suits an evening ritual - pair it with slow breathing to signal the end of the day.

Getting started

How to use Kunzea oil

  1. Start with the diffuser

Add 3 to 6 drops to your diffuser or oil burner with water. This is the easiest, safest way to enjoy Kunzea day to day.

  2. Always dilute for the skin

Never apply undiluted. Mix a drop or two into a carrier oil such as jojoba or sweet almond, and patch test first.

  3. Experiment with blends

Combine with other Australian natives to build your own signature aroma - start with one drop at a time.

  4. Prefer it on the skin? Reach for the cream

For muscles and joints, our TGA-listed Kunzea Pain Relief Cream delivers Kunzea in a ready-to-use topical form.

Safe use

  • For external use only. Dilute before applying to skin.
  • Avoid contact with eyes. Keep out of reach of children.
  • If pregnant or breastfeeding, consult your health practitioner first.
  • Patch test before first skin use. Discontinue if irritation occurs.
  • Store below 30°C, out of direct sunlight.

Kunzea oil questions

Frequently asked questions

What is Kunzea oil used for?

Kunzea oil is used mainly in aromatherapy - diffused or inhaled for its clean, grounding aroma, added to saunas, and blended with other essential oils. Well diluted in a carrier oil, it is also traditionally used on the skin. For muscle and joint comfort, most people prefer Kunzea in a ready-made topical form such as our TGA-listed Kunzea Pain Relief Cream.

What does Kunzea oil smell like?

Kunzea has a clean, fresh, invigorating aroma with a lightly medicinal, slightly spicy undertone. It sits somewhere between eucalyptus and tea tree, but softer and more grounding. The strength of aroma is medium.

Where does Kunzea oil come from?

Our Kunzea oil is single origin from the North-East region of Tasmania, Australia, on Pyemmairrener land. It is steam distilled from the leaves of the wild-harvested Kunzea ambigua shrub, a member of the Myrtaceae (myrtle) family.

Is Kunzea oil the same as tea tree oil?

No. Both are Australian oils from the Myrtaceae family, but they are different plants with different constituent profiles. Kunzea (Kunzea ambigua) is high in alpha-pinene and has a softer, more grounding aroma, while tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) is dominated by terpinen-4-ol and has a sharper scent.

How do you use Kunzea oil on skin?

Always dilute Kunzea oil before applying it to the skin - mix a drop or two into a carrier oil such as jojoba or sweet almond, and patch test first. Never apply undiluted essential oil directly. If you want Kunzea on your skin without blending it yourself, our Kunzea creams and roll-ons are pre-formulated and ready to use.

Is Kunzea oil safe?

Kunzea oil has no known contraindications when used correctly, but like all essential oils it is concentrated and for external use only. Dilute before skin use, keep away from eyes, store out of reach of children, and consult your health practitioner if pregnant, breastfeeding or managing a medical condition.

What makes Zea's Kunzea oil different?

We are a Certified B Corporation and a 1% for the Planet member, with 25+ years of industry experience behind the range.
